Health Benefits of Doing A Detox

Why do a Detox?

In today’s world, we are exposed to thousands of environmental toxins and chemicals. We make unhealthy food choices regarding what we expose our bodies to, such as impure water, poor air quality, pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, tobacco use, and skin care products. We are also eating more sugar, preservatives, and processed foods, and we are more mentally stressed than ever.

Toxins exit the body through our metabolic system. The lungs, lymphatic system, liver, kidneys, and colon work together to break down and excrete toxins and are well equipped to do so within reason. However, our bodies are not capable of eliminating today’s overwhelming abundance of different toxins and chemicals that we inhale and ingest and, as a result, these accumulate in our cells (especially fat cells), tissues, blood, and organs and remain stored for an indefinite period of time.

A systemic cleanse is one way to assure that our metabolic systems are most effectively able to eliminate toxins. Cleanses are designed to eliminate the toxic buildup of disease-causing bacteria and poisonous heavy metals. They also help replenish beneficial and health promoting bacteria. As a result of the cleanse process, we can prevent the formation of new buildup, eliminate harmful parasites, restore normal bowel function, and promote regularity. Our metabolic organ system is then recharged and our immune system rejuvenated.

The following signs and symptoms are a good indication that a cleanse is needed:

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Gas, bloating, and intestinal complaints
  • Weight gain
  • Poor and impaired digestion
  • Food allergies
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Frequent colds
  • Recurrent headaches
  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Food cravings
  • Skin problems or rashes
  • Metallic or abnormal tastes in the mouth
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Candida infection
  • Insomnia
  • Poor mental function and difficulty with concentration
  • Difficulty conceiving

It is recommended, and most beneficial, to cleanse 2x/year. Spring and fall are the best. A quality cleanse will consist of an elimination diet (devoid of flours, sugars, yeasts, toxic animal products, and fermented products). It will also include a nutritional supplementation program, and will advocate exercise and stress management.

During a cleanse it is normal to experience increased bowel activity and urination, mild nausea, headaches, irritability, skin breakouts, flu-like systems, and muscle aches. These are all temporary and are most typical within the first few days as toxins are eliminated. Many times, after the completion of a cleanse program, participants experience a dramatic increase in energy and overall well being. Typically, this is noticeable enough to inspire dietary and habitual changes.

(Beware of cleanses that encourage the use of diarhetics or limit caloric intake excessively)

Here is a suggestion of an excellent cleanse we recommend:

When cleansing, it is best to be under the guidance of a health professional, such as your naturopath or chiropractor. Please don’t hesitate to ask us for more information regarding cleanses.
